Description

Besgrow New Zealand Sphagnum Moss is considered some of the best moss on the market.  Find here their classic grade with 6" strands in a 150 gram pack.

Sphagnum moss is used by gardeners to line hanging baskets, make floral wreaths and fill topiary frames. Sphagnum moss can be used for growing carnivorous plants and bonsai and is also used for reptile bedding.  By laying sphagnum moss around the tops of houseplants it will help to retain moisture and allow for more time between watering.

What is the difference between New Zealand, Chile and Chinese Sphagnum Moss?
  NZ Chile Chinese
Strands large, robust leaf and long stem dense leaf but short strands fragile leaf and short strands
Structure strong structure reasonably strong structure weak structure
Chemical
Properties
Natural pH, 4.8 with an EC of 0.1mS/cm Natural pH, 4.8 but inconsistent EC
between 0.1-0.5mS/cm
High pH and high EC
Salt
Accumulation
Will hold onto nutrients for the plant but not
accumulate harsh salts
Potential to accumulate salts when
nutrients applied
Can easily accumulate salts when
nutrients applied
AFP Strong structure means it will not become
over compacted in pot
Dense leaf hugging stem may lead
to lower AFP when compacted in pot
Provides little air to plant when
compacted tightly in pot
Contamination Minimal amounts of contamination
(dependent on grade)
Minimal amounts of contamination
(dependent on grade)
Can contain contaminants which break
down quickly in pot consuming nitrogen.
Sterility Sterile substrate protects plants from
pathogens
Generally sterile substrate but can harbor
Sporotrichosis (fungal pathogen to humans)
Unsterile substrate.  Recommend
sterilization prior to use
Longevity Robust nature allows for longevity in pot
4-5 years

Shorter, less robust strands and smaller leaf structure lessen longevity in pot
2-3 years

Due to contamination and fragility of moss, breaks down very quickly
9-12 months
